We don't build toilets
We're unconvinced that toilets are the weakest link in the urban sanitation chain. Why? 850 million people in Africa in Asia live without safe treatment services, compared to 350 million people without access to a latrine.
We believe it is the latter half of the sanitation process — collection, transport, and treatment — that is truly dysfunctional. Latrines get used. They fill up. And they become unusable and harmful unless they are emptied.
We don’t bill households
The assumption that household billing will cover the costs of waste treatment drives – and often justifies – the construction of treatment plants.
In developing countries, a vast majority of the resulting facilities are built on this assumption. Effective billing systems are seldom put into place, and the ability and willingness of users to pay for sanitation seldom add up to the full costs.
We demand reuse
If environmental protection isn’t a compelling enough reason for reuse, we’ve got another: Money.
Pivot’s business model is built around harnessing economic value from human waste. By re-branding human waste as a raw material, we’re replacing treatment plants with factories, making “treatment” the by-product of our fuel production process – completely reinventing the economics of sanitation.

We don't produce biogas
Energy generation from human waste has become nearly synonymous with biogas generation.
We believe that solid fuel is the superior energy endpoint. Solid fuel is easier to store and transport, in ready demand, and a cost-effective means of harnessing embodied energy in waste.
Further, the biogas generated by many community-scale plants goes unutilized. When released into the atmosphere, this biogas poses 20x the climate change impact of CO2.
